EP 59 – Sudan Is Speaking. Will the World Listen? Janet McElligott

Sudan’s people have been speaking. The question, Janet McElligott says, is whether the world is willing to listen.

Janet McElligott joins the Crazy Amazing Humans Podcast to explain Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, the war crimes reported in El Fasher and why Sudanese survivors are still struggling to be heard.

For more than four decades, Janet has worked across international politics, counterterrorism, conflict resolution and hostage negotiations, much of it behind the scenes. Her work connected her to Sudan long before the current Sudan war began. Today, as founder of Sudan War Crimes, she uses social media and public advocacy to carry accounts of displacement, hunger, sexual violence and survival beyond Sudan’s borders.

In this urgent conversation with hosts Katrina Carlson and Jefferson Denim, Janet explains the Sudan conflict in human terms. She discusses the humanitarian catastrophe facing civilians, the atrocities reported in El Fasher and the survivors whose experiences now shape her mission. She also recalls the emotional social media message that unexpectedly reached millions of people and the promise she made: “I will speak until the world listens.”

Producer and filmmaker Ken Carlson steps in front of the camera to revisit the extraordinary path of his documentary The Heart of Nuba. Ken and Janet recount how the film reached members of Sudan’s former government and, according to the account they received, influenced a ceasefire in the Nuba Mountains. Their story offers a striking example of art moving beyond awareness and into action.

The episode also reveals a side of Sudan rarely captured in reports about war crimes, famine and displacement. Janet describes generosity in communities facing profound scarcity, volunteers feeding displaced families and the dignity Sudanese people hope to reclaim as they rebuild their lives. She explains why she wears pearls, silk and brocade into dangerous places and how beauty can become a declaration that war does not get to erase humanity.

Janet’s personal story gives that image added meaning. After a childhood injury left her facing the possibility that she might never walk normally again, she refused to let that prediction determine her future. Decades later, she is pursuing a place on a New York Fashion Week runway to bring greater attention and resources to Sudan War Crimes.

Above all, Janet offers a practical challenge: Look up. Notice what touches your heart. Share a story that needs to travel. Choose one need, whether it is connected to Sudan or your own neighborhood, and make it 1% better.

As Janet says: “You do not have to make the difference. You can make a difference.”
